Current State of Sea Level Rise in North Carolina

Discussions will cover the science behind sea level rise and the current conditions, future projections, and impacts in North Carolina. Researchers, Dr. Alejandra Ortiz, Dr. Devon Eulie, and Mariko Polk will provide 10-minute presentations on what causes sea level rise, current and future conditions of sea level rise in North Carolina, and impacts to different ecosystems in North Carolina, followed by an open discussion with the audience.

NSF - Coastlines & Peope Workshop

Watch Dr. Ortiz promote a new Coastal Hub - CoHUBS as part of NSF's virtual workshop looking at new ideas in coastal reserach. In an effort to better understand the research needs related to advancing understanding of the impacts of coastal environmental variability and natural hazards on populated coastal regions, the University Cooperation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), with a grant from the National Science Foundation, assembled 400+ scientists to obtain recommendations on how to pursue these goals.

The Coastal Team sent out 7 students led by Dr. Sciaudone to investigate beach change up in Kitty Hawk, Oregon Inlet, and Cape Hatteras after Florence. Dr. Ortiz's students enjoyed the lovely weather and learning new field techniques!

Dr. Ortiz - Early Career Fellow

The Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine today announced the recipients of its 2018 Early-Career Research Fellowships. These competitive awards are aimed at supporting the development of future generations of scientists, engineers, and health professionals who work at the intersections of offshore energy system safety, human health and well-being, and environmental stewardship in the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. coastal regions. 

Future Ingenerios Summer Students!

We are working with the Juntos Summer Academy with several hispanic high school students for three days each morning. The students are working with myself and two other faculty here at NCSU to get them interested in STEM. My graduate students are leading today's meeting by presenting on their projects and how it relates to what the JUNTOS students are doing with us.
